Feedback on Recent UI Changes in QuickSight

Hi @ArunSanthosh

As I know you are a core member of the QuickSight product team, I want to highlight some pain points regarding the recent UI changes.

Yesterday, we noticed that the old UI was replaced with a new one without any prior notice. Sudden changes like this can be difficult to accept.

I’m not sure why the QuickSight team decided to replace the old UI, which was simple and smooth to use. The menus and toolbars were well-organized, and everything worked seamlessly. Instead of enhancing the user experience or adding new features, the UI was completely replaced.

I have worked with other BI tools like Tableau and Power BI, and they don’t change their UI so drastically. Minor changes are fine, but this complete overhaul is challenging to adapt to.

Data field Sections

For instance, in the dataset window, dimensions were previously blue color and measures are in green color, which made it easy to differentiate between them. Now, with the new UI, dimensions are blue color and measures are orange color, which feels odd from a UI perspective.

Visual Type Options

Similarly, the visual types are not as clear or highlighted in the new UI, making it feel cluttered. The parameter and layout buttons have been moved from the left side, where they were easy to access, to a less convenient location.

Field Well Sections

The field well has also been relocated from the top to the left side, causing it to disappear and requiring additional clicks to access. This change is quite frustrating for user experience.

QuickSight Ribbon and Logo Sections

Additionally, the ribbon color has changed from blue to black and blue, which feels less cohesive. The QuickSight logo now has an underscored highlight, and the “Manage QuickSight” button on the profile page feels inconsistent for an enterprise tool.

Calculated Field

In the data field section, the default “+CALCULATED FIELD” button seems unnecessary, as users can directly create a calculated field from the Data and Insert menu.

Filter Sections

The filter button has moved from the left side to the top, which complicates its use. The format visual button has also been relocated from the left to the right, making it harder to navigate, and the format options now appear cluttered.

Format Visual options

The edit title button has changed from a radio button to an eye button, and the overall format visual section in the new UI is less user-friendly.

Action Button

Previously, the action button was on the left, now it’s on the right side with the interaction sections. These types of UI changes are not acceptable for a mature BI tool.

Our team is facing significant challenges due to these changes. All of our dashboards were built on the old UI, and now we are experiencing disruptions during our work hours. It’s painful to adapt to these changes.

I apologize for raising these issues, but it’s hard to accept the new UI. Instead of simplifying our day-to-day activities, it has created more problems. My overall experience with the new UI is 0 out of 10.

There hasn’t been any simplification from the old UI to the new UI rather, it has become more complex to use.

We spend 4-5 hours daily in QuickSight, but if the user experience is not good, how can we work effectively

I would love to hear from other community members about these changes, whether their feedback is positive or negative.

Thank you for your attention.

At AWS, our roadmap is primarily driven by our customers. Your feedback helps us build a better service. I have tagged this as a feature request.

Hi Biswajit @Biswajit_1993 ,

Thanks for reaching out to us.
We understand that doing a full layout change has an associated learning curve for the users and doing it overnight can put authors in a tough spot. That is why we provided an option for switching back to old experience when we launched this ‘new look’ back in Nov’23.

The design changes were result of extensive research done by our UX team and aimed at improving the end user experience. The details of all the changes is available in this launch blog (from Nov’23) - Introducing new analysis experience on Amazon QuickSight | AWS Business Intelligence Blog

You are seeing this change now probably because you had opted to revert to the old experience earlier and that ‘old look’ option expired now. Change is always difficult. Give it few days and I’m sure you will start to love the new experience.
