I have a really quick and perhaps simple question.
How do I add comments into a calcualted field in my analysis?
Perhaps it’s my poor management of calcualted fields, but I want to get into the behaviour of commenting on any that I create. I have a number of dashboard and analysis’, and sometimes when I come back to them after a while, I forget why I have used some of the logic in the calculation. This, plus the abilitly for other users to see comments on what the metric is mean to calcualte.
I have tried using /, // and # (like in other languages), but it doesnt seem to work.
Thank you @shravya , there is another way you can add the comment as well. See the below details. When you add the comment here, in the analysis page you can see this description when scroll on the field. This is also useful . @QSCommUser
@shravya - thanks very much for this. My comments were being added after the calculation, so the comment would be on row 3/4/5 etc - not row 1.
@Sanjeeb2022 - thanks for this - I was aware of this functionality, BUT this is only able to be done at the data set level. So if you have dataset level calculations you are able to use this, but if you calculations are done in the analysis, you are unable to use this option.
Perhaps the QuickSight team could elaborate on this OR add this as a feature request. Having the ability to add descriptions of commetns for a calculated field from the field list in the analysis would be great.
Thanks @QSCommUser for the feedback, we will request QuickSight team to add this as a feature request.
Hi @Max@eperts - When an calculated field at the calculation level, there is NO functionality available to add description and comments. This is something we can add as a feature request for down the line. Please help.
Hi @QSCommUser - I don’t fully understand the issue at hand here. You can add comments before and after the formula, just make sure it’s not the last line.
What is the functionality that you’re asking for specifically?
In direct response to your question - my issue was with being able to add comments. As mentioned above, I was adding comments after the formula, but on the last line.
The main issue is that I was not able to find any documentation about how or where to comment on your calculations. So having these documented rather than a user finding out through trial and error would be optimal…
I have tested the below and it appears that you can add comments anywhere except the last line - all of the below positions appear to work.
Regarding the functionality, @Sanjeeb2022 shared a snapshot of where you are able to “Edit name & Description” to calculated field in your dataset - I was asking if this functionality could be made available in the analysis - here is snip of where I mean:
Thanks for the feedback @QSCommUser. Having the Name and Description at the Data set level makes sense because a DataSet can be consumed by many Analyses. That way making a change in the Dataset will cascade to all Analyses. I will raise it with the QuickSight team to see what they think.
