Clarification needed: Puerto Rico mapping functionality in Quick Sight

Hi Team,

We need clarification on how Quick Sight handles geographic data for Puerto Rico in map visualizations. We’ve found conflicting information in the documentation:

  1. Current Documentation Questions: (Geospatial troubleshooting - Amazon QuickSight)
  • In one table, Puerto Rico is listed as a separate country with 5-digit zipcode support
  • In another table, it’s included under USA states and territories
  • Need confirmation on the correct classification and mapping behavior
  1. Specific Requirements:
  • We need to understand how Puerto Rico data points will be displayed on our map visualizations
  • Will Puerto Rico appear as part of the US continental view?
  • What geographic identifiers are supported for Puerto Rico (zip codes, municipalities, etc.)?
  1. Please provide guidance on:
  • The correct way to structure geographic data for Puerto Rico
  • Any known limitations or considerations for Puerto Rico mapping
  • Best practices for implementing Puerto Rico visualizations in our dashboards

Please let me know if you need additional information to assist with this inquiry.

Thanks!

Hello @hprem
If I understand you my suggestion is:

Create a column called country and assign Puerto Rico to all rows. This way, will be recognised because, as I understand it, the default is the USA. When I applied the country column, it worked for my charts.

Hi @lary_andr, for my use case the dataset already contains a country column. My question was more around understanding if Puerto Rico would be treated as a territory of the United States or a separate Country on point maps, given the confusion from the documentation. As a workaround, I tested both approaches and found that Quick Sight only displays Puerto Rico data points when:

  • Country is set as “United States”
  • Using standard US ZIP codes (00600-00999)

When setting Puerto Rico as a separate country, the map failed to render the data points.

Hi @hprem,
Thank you for sharing your findings. There are still some limitations with the Quick Sight map visuals and I’ve seen a couple community posts regarding the use of Puerto Rico. I’ll mark this as a feature request to keep it on the support team’s radar when considering future feature fixes.

Thank you!
