Different way of doing RLS

Is there a better way to do RLS than to have a spreadsheet with mapping information and uploading that spreadsheet as a second dataset attached to a dashboard? Seems tough to maintain a csv file for each dataset. It would be alot easier if the data for RLS could be pulled from another athena database for example. Are there any possibilties, other than csv file, that anyone knows about?

as far as i know you can use any other type of datasource (csv, Athena…)

@ErikG is correct you can host the RLS table in a database. You then create the RLS table as a QuickSight dataset. If you are using SPICE, you will need to set necessary refresh schedule. Documentation on RLS is here.
