Does data type change at source table has downstream impact on my QS analysis & Dashboard?

Hello,

I was wondering if the data type change at the source table has a downstream impact on my QS analysis & Dashboard.

e.g. I have a dataset A in my database. And I’ve created a QS dataset, and in addition, analysis and dashboard from this dataset A. And now, I’m planning to change the data type (e.g. TEXT to FLOAT) of a few metrics in dataset A in my database, would this break my QS analysis and dashboard?

Hi @irinaaaaa,
Whenever you make a change to a dataset that is in use by an analysis/dashboard, it’s very likely to make changes to your visuals. I would suggest creating a duplicate of your analysis to make changes on, that way you can see what may get altered when making the switch.

Hello @Brett,

Thank you for your suggestion. Since I have to make the change at the data source, thus, I’m unable to do the testing with the duplicated dataset. As a result, I was wondering if AWS QS has any documentation OR if you are aware of whether only data type change impacts QS analysis/dashboard.

Hi @irinaaaaa,
Unfortunately, there’s no AWS documentation that I’m aware of that covers this currently. The way an analysis/dashboard gets affected can also depend on how the fields being changed are used throughout them (i.e. if and how they’re being used in calculated fields); the affects could be different for each case as well so it is very case specific.

One other work around you could potentially try; setup two copies of the dataset in SPICE. Make a copy of the analysis you are working from and replace the dataset with the new copy. Then, when you update the database, refresh only the duplicate dataset. Then you can see how the analysis will be impacted by the change.

Other than that, I’m afraid I’m out of other ideas as testing out changes on a dataset are the best way to see how it gets affected.
