Export to CSV when values on row axis swaps rows and columns

Hi,

I’m finding that when I have a dashboard formatted like a balance sheet, with values set to be on the row axis instead of the default column axis, exporting to CSV results in the rows and columns being flipped - where the values are on the columns axis and the attributes that are defined in the column axis now appearing as rows in the exported CSV. This is true with both the Table and Pivot Table visuals.

Exporting to Excel is fine - works as expected - only exporting to CSV with values on the row axis appears to be a problem. Is there a way around this? I don’t have flexibility to change the client’s design - and it’s a pretty basic report requirement.

As an example Balance sheet to illustrate - note the values are on the row axis with region on the column axis:

When exported, the CSV looks something like this - with the columns now rows and rows as columns:

Hey @GHitch , welcome to the QuickSight community!

I don’t think there is a way to change this because the CSV is exporting the underlying data, not the table visual view.

I know that you can not change the layout but I think the best option for a user to understand the change would be to have an export table that is formatted similar to the way the CSV will pull the data. This would be something they could navigate to when they want to export the data from the table.

Thanks Duncan.

I kind of expected this to be the case, but was hoping it was something I was missing.

One of the real values of a BI tool is the ability to crosstab and manipulate the data into any form possible - with the ability to both display and export it in the form you’ve manipulated it into. Some (not all) BI tools can export in the displayed pivot table form to CSV. IMHO this should be a feature enhancement - because while getting the base data in a base structure has it’s uses, it’s more useful to end-users if it’s already transformed.
