Getting latest month and latest year defalults in filter

I would like to have a latest month in month filter and latest year in year filter as default selection. Both should automatically change its selection to current month or year as and when the both changes, any ideas would be very much appreciated

Have you tried using a relative dates filter? You can change it to a month / year.
