Q&A from the live session - Asset versioning and restoration

(answers from Webex-generated transcript)

Q: Does QuickSight asset versioning work in conjuction with the asset bundle API?
A: Versioning is a separate thing, it will not work with that but like, once you restore it, you, you can’t revert back, it doesn’t work together.
When you use the asset bundle API, it is creating a new asset. But, I mean, the last command which I showed, maybe it will help you to link some existing, uh, uh, assets like dashboards also with that.
So, answer is no to best of my knowledge.

Q: Do you know what the best practice would be for backing up analysis “version” would be? For example, once per hour or per day maybe?
A: It basically depends on the organization. you won’t be taking a backup so frequently for dashboards and analysis, maybe once in a day, or once in a week is usually a common practice. It completely depends on how you implement this kind of changes so for important assets, you can do it more frequent for, uh, less, uh, important assets, which are not changing. Uh, so often you may do it less frequent as well. So it’s a backup. Like, you can have backup policy, you don’t need to do it. Uh, every hour, um, that will too much. If your question is more on continuous deployment, uh, the asset bundle can also use for continuously deploying from, non prod account or production account you can use that, but as a backup, uh, it’s more like, if some issue happens, and and you want to restore the asset. So, as for that purpose. So, uh, you should not be doing it very, very often.

Q: Is there a plan to include data from spice (eg. uploaded files) in the export? If yes, when do you expect that feature?
A: So, the, the answer is just just to clarify, supported in the asets bundle export, but some data type, uh, such as a file. If you upload a file from your local machine, or if the data source is the data in some application, such as a kind of application. Now we are not supporting the export. Say, if your data is sitting in the file, then in this case, you may put it into the S3 bucket using the as a data source in then in this case, you can use the bundle to export.
Say, what is the use case of the assets as 1? The job function we mention at the beginning so the common use case is, like, if you want to do a a dashboard, um, migration, for example, like, you have a 2 emerging in your application development, maybe you have a development environment, you have testing environment, you have production environment.
Then you have dashboard in maybe in your lower environment in testing environment, then you want to migrate to testing or migrating production, then you can use the to deploy the dashboard. And another use case is like, if you want to do a, we call the, that is quite common in the application development.

That you want to, uh, when you modify some, then you want to go for some approval process and then they again deploy to another environment. Then in this case, you can also use the bundle say, when someone modified the, uh, dashboard or analyst in the development environment.
And you can trigger a alert to say to the Approver the approval can approve or reject whether they want to allow this dashboard to be, um, deployed to an environment. This is the, uh, say, 2nd, use case. And the 1st, common use case is like, if you have a maybe hundreds of dashboard, you have a launch of dashboard, but then you may want to apply the same changes. For example, like all the dashboard I want to change from to pie chart, then you see 1 of the option is you can do it manually. Right? You can do hundreds of them 1 by 1 manually, but, they automate this process. You may use it to modify the changes, then after you modify the changes you need to deploy to another environment, then in this case, you can use the bundle to deploy enrollment.
So those 3 are the common use case for for this feature.

Q: Is the Auto refresh of dashboard is in roadmap?
A: Dashboard is the enrollment, um, this 1 is already in production in Ga. So to clarify if my understanding is correct when you say auto refresh you mean that the dashboard for example, if you put the dashboard in, uh, maybe in a meeting room, you want the dashboard to be maybe every 2nd, it will auto refresh to reflect the latest data. So, this feature is already in GA.
1st of all, you need to use a SQL data source and then, and other thing is, um, you need to raise a support ticket. You need to raise a tech support ticket to enable this to enable these features. It needs to use the QuickSight capacity pricing so but when you raise a ticket, then you will get, uh, the support engineer will guide you regarding the process. To recap 2 things, the data source, it’d be directory and you need to raise the support ticket.
