Scatter Plots: X Axis Dimension, Y Axis Aggregate, Color Dimension, and Size Aggregate

I was hoping to build a visualization in QuickSight that involved grouping the x-axis by a dimension (asset resale month), aggregating the y-axis by a measure (avg resale margin), breaking up that aggregation by another dimension (asset acquisition month), and sizing by an aggregate (count of asset resales).

Here is an example, using non-representative samples, from another tool (Mode) that allows this type of behavior:

This is a very important visualization capability for this use case, as it allows me to see:

  1. The resale performance by acquisition cohort, grouped by the date (range) of the resale, and critically 2. how much a given acquisition cohort is contributing to that resale performance.

A “typical” scatter plot does not satisfy the above, as a huge number of dots on a visualization doesn’t allow one to truly understand how much a given asset acquisition cohort is contributing to a given resale cohort. A bar chart doesn’t satisfy the above, because, while it can do all of the groupings requested, I cannot visualize the size of the contribution of an acquisition cohort along with its performance.

This is probably more of a feature request than a question, but if anybody has ideas on how to hack my way to a visual like the above, I’m all ears.

Hi @Andris ,

Can you share a sample dataset in the Arena to explore and recreate the visual you need?
Also when you mention " aggregating the y-axis by a measure (avg resale margin), breaking up that aggregation by another dimension (asset acquisition month)", do you mean to use colour to distinguish your plot points based on asset acquisition month? Or how do you intend to break up?

I tried to create a similar visual on a sample data I have and was able to recreate some parts of it using scatter plot visual type.

However the data labels could not be added, but are visible in tooltip when configured.

Thanks,
Prantika
