Currently the only workaround for mapping is to use the geographical hierarchy and define geographical roles. However QuickSight lacks the ability to take shapefiles as an input. The current map viz configuration is prone to misspellings of county/state names and is incapable of visualizing sophisticated geographical patterns (Like weather forecasting maps or using an image (like a stadium or theatre seats map) as a basemap.

At AWS, our roadmap is primarily driven by our customers. Your feedback helps us build a better service. Unfortunately at this time QuickSight does not have the ability to import custom maps like the ones that you have mentioned. I have tagged this as a feature request.
