I would go for a stacked bar chart.
In my opinion the overlap is a bit misleading.

If it’s a requirement for replicating this stacked view, I would use free form layout and create 2 horizontal bar charts - one for male and one for female and overlay them on top of each other. You would make the background transparent and turn off all the X and Y axis. It’s not elegant, but it may be worth exploring.
