Distance Calculation Using Latitude and Longitude in AWS Quick Sight

I would like to inquire if it is possible to calculate the distance between two points using their latitude and longitude coordinates directly in AWS Quick Sight. If this functionality is available, could you please provide the details or formula for creating a calculated field to achieve this?

I hope you’re doing well.

I wanted to discuss a scenario where we need to calculate the distance between two sets of geographic coordinates. Specifically:

  • We have one table containing Visit Latitude and Visit Longitude.
  • We have another table containing Outlet Latitude and Outlet Longitude.

We need to compute the distance between each visit and its corresponding outlet to determine how far each visit is from the outlet.

Could you advise on how we might achieve this calculation? If there are any specific methods or formulas you recommend, please let me know.

It’s not… Quick Sight can’t compute operations such as SIN and COSINE.

We’ve been waiting for this for years and ended up going with performing the calculations out of Quick Sight using SQL. It’s a pain but is the only way we’ve found.

If it wasn’t for the time we’ve spent in development and training our over 300 readers, we’d have moved to a different tool.
