Left join works fine in Redshift, not in Quicksight

I’m having trouble figuring out why a particular left join isn’t working in a QuickSight dashboard.

The dataset is three tables, a “core” metrics table and two reference tables outer joined to it. One of the tables appears to be joining just fine, but the other is returning all nulls. The problem table is a sort-of translator table for parts suppliers, as this data comes from third-party partners and the naming of these suppliers can vary wildly (“Kioxia” vs “KioxiaAmerica” vs “KIOXIA”…etc) and some of them are in Chinese. I’ve double-checked the join already.

The tables outer join just fine in Redshift. The only reasons for disconnect in QuickSight I can possibly envision are either A) the supplier field is varchar(100) in one table and varchar(256) in the other, or B) some of the supplier text is Chinese.

Worst case, I could just add the ‘aligned’ supplier name to the core table and eliminate the need for the join in the first place, but I’m hoping to not have to do that. In any event, I do want to know what exactly the issue is here for future reference. Interested to know if anyone else has had this issue and was it something obvious? Thank you.

Hi @RamboJohnJay,

Welcome to the Quick Suite Community! Could you elaborate a little more about your problem table with the Chinese supplier names? I would recommend looking into how these Chinese characters are encoded, as I agree that this could be the reason for why it’s not working in Quick Suite.

If possible as well, could you provide an Arena link of the same tables with mock data so I could see if there are any other underlying issues?

Thank you!

Hi @RamboJohnJay,

Following up here as it’s been awhile since we last heard from you on this thread; did you have any additional questions regarding your initial post?

If we do not hear back within the next 3 business days, I’ll close out this topic.

Thank you
