What does SPICE consider as null? Is it the same for direct-query?

I converted a direct-query dataset to SPICE and noticed that the same field values are treated differently with respect to null. In my analysis, an ‘’/empty value shows up as null in SPICE, but empty in direct-query. Therefore, when I use null custom values, the ‘’/empty values convert to the custom value in SPICE, but not in direct-query. What am I missing?

I came across this Q&A but it seems the rule referenced in the solution is not the same for SPICE and direct-query. How to show [blank] when field value is null and empty?
