Ability to sort on color in tables

Hello,

Would it be possible in the near future to have the ability to sort on color in a table? I use conditional formatting to highlight specific values but the sort option only limits to A-z and z-A. Any chance this is already in the pipeline somewhere?

Hi @NJK90,
How would you envision the visual changing based on color sorting? Would it be set by a specific field value? If so, you could try setting up your sort based on an ‘off-visual field’ so that it matches your conditional formatting.

Let me know if this could work for your case. If setup differently, please include some additional information on what type of visual you’re using and how the conditional formatting is setup so that we can better understand how you’d like to display your data.

Thank you

Hi there,

No I mean when I publish the dashboard and it is visible for endusers, they only have the option to sort az-za. I use conditional formatting to have values with colors, but you can not sort on color first for example…

Hi @NJK90,
So if you click on the column that has the values and then sort, does it not change the order? Depending on how you have your conditional formatting setup, you should still be able to sort a value field by the values which would essentially be the same as sorting by the colors.

Let me know if the conditional formatting is setup differently/trying to sort the values not in order of largest to smallest or smallest to largest.

@Brett no in my dashboard for end users the only option to sort is a-z, z-a. Whilst I have a conditional formatting set up to make certain values green. It’s kinda like in Excel where you have to ability to sort based on color first. I want all the greens first since they are the ones they might focus on in certain cases. In general I sort all columns on A-Z base or highest revenue or something but in this case I want them to be able to sort on color.

Hi @NJK90,
Sorry, I understand now. There may be a work around you could explore here. When publishing your dashboard, under ‘More Settings’ you can toggle on an option to ‘Enable Ad Hoc Filtering’. This will allow the user to see the filter options attached to a given visual that they normally couldn’t see:

So for your visual that you’d like to sort by the conditional formatting, maybe you could try creating a rank calculated field that would order your conditional formatting field and adding that as a filter. You can disable the filter for the time being (but it will still show up on the ad hoc filtering options in dashboard):

If you can’t see the filter panel on your dashboard view, you can hit the 'filter button at the top where I have an arrow pointing).
I don’t have a great dataset to test this out on but this would be the only work around I can think of as sorting by conditional formatting is not a currently available feature in QS.
