I’m trying to confirm whether QuickSight Q (Topics/Q&A) supports datasets that use Direct Query mode when the datasource is Amazon Redshift.
I have the following setup:

Datasource: Amazon Redshift (Direct Query mode)

Dataset ownership: I am the owner
-
Permissions: Author Pro
-
Security: RLS enabled
-
Issue: Topic creation fails every time
I could not find any clear documentation confirming whether QuickSight Q fully supports Direct Query + Redshift for Topic creation.
Can anyone confirm:

Does QuickSight Q officially support Direct Query datasets from Redshift?

If yes, are there known limitations when using RLS with Q Topics?

Are there specific configuration steps required to make Q work with Direct Query mode?

As you mentioned, there does not seem to be any documentation for using a Redshift data source in Direct Query mode. However, I still think this could be doable. Before running the Topic, I would recommend making sure that the Direct Query data source runs smoothly and as intended, as depending on your data source it could fail or run slow. As long as that is good, I would try to see if the Topic works consistently.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I checked—the Redshift dataset query is running fine and returning data. I’m not sure why the Topic is failing on this dataset

Datasets using Direct Query mode and RLS are supported for Topics. Given the error you are facing, I would recommend filing a case with AWS Support where we can dive into the details so that we can help you further. Here are the steps to open a support case. If your company has someone who manages your AWS account, you might not have direct access to AWS Support and will need to raise an internal ticket to your IT team or whomever manages your AWS account. They should be able to open an AWS Support case on your behalf. Hope this helps!
