How to sort field in groups/color

Hello,

I have a vertical bar chart with three fields - one in x-axis, one in groups/color and one in small multiples.
I am not able to sort the field under groups by order of count. How do I do that?

Hi @ggpatil and welcome to the QuickSight community!
When you select the ellipses next to the value under group/color, do you not receive the ‘sort order’ option like below?:

Could you provide some screenshots of:

  • Your field well (the area that lists the fields you’re using for each section like shown above)
  • Your current visual
  • What you’d like your visual to look like after this change is made

Some additional information could assist in seeing where the problem lies.

Thank you!

Hi!
Thank you for your response!
I do see the option to sort. My field is a string data type. I want to sort by count of the field.

Hi @ggpatil,
Thanks for sharing! Could I see what the whole visual looks like? It may be a limitation due to the ‘small multiples’ addition but would be helpful to see the whole visual.

Thank you!

Hi @ggpatil,

couldn’t you use a calculated field with count(value) and filter it with off-visual field?

I don’t see a sort by option for groups/color. I used sort by for the other fields but it did not work.

Hi @ggpatil,
A couple notes on this:
Without a field in the ‘value’ section, it won’t be possible to sort by a different category, like ‘count’ in your instance. As ‘count’ isn’t being used as a measure anywhere, you can’t set it to be sorted.

Additionally, while you may be able to sort differently by adding a field to the value section, you may still run into a limitation as each ‘grouping’ will keep the categories in the same position across the graph. So when sorted, whatever is first in order on the first ‘group’, it will continue in that order across the visual in all other groupings.
I do not believe it’s possible to have each section of groupings across the x-axis to be sorted differently.
