Searchbox Logic Changes

I have noticed the search functionality has changed. It used to search on the exact string input, as if it were a LIKE search on %STRING%. Now it won’t search if your search string starts in the middle of a word, and treats each space in your search string as a wildcard. With the way a lot of my resources are named, this makes it much more difficult for me to find what I’m looking for. I have no idea why you would change the search logic that has been established for years, but it has caused a lot of my reports that have names for easier searchability to be much harder to find, and every user would have to readapt to conform to the new search logic. It’s very backwards.

Question: Can we revert this change?

Hi @Sean_Middlehurst,

Thanks for flagging this. We tried to replicate the behavior you described but couldn’t reproduce it on our end. Could you provide a little more context like where in the platform were you searching? (e.g., dashboard list, dataset search, filter/control on a report). Depending on which search bar you’re referring to, it is my understanding that the search logic cannot be changed.

Hi @Sean_Middlehurst,

I wanted to check in with you as it has been some time since we last heard from you. Were you able to resolve your issue or is there any new details you would want to provide? If so, feel free to share with the rest of the community.

Thanks!

Hi @WLS-Cesar,

Honestly I just wanted to complain about the logic and see if anyone agreed that changing the search logic was annoying.

A lot of our dashboards are in the format “ ”. Thing is, a lot of dashboards are for the same customer, and a lot of dashboards have the same topic. For instance, if it’s a dashboard called Agency Finance, there are a lot of dashboards for other customers called Finance, and also a lot of dashboards for Agency for different topics. The easiest way for me to search a specific dashboard would be to start the search midway through a customer name and hit enter midway through the topic name, e.g., searching for “cy fi” would be a quick way to find the Agency Finance dashboard and very few other dashboards since it takes parts of both words, but reduces typing. However, now this wouldn’t work with the new search functionality because any word you search for in the box only brings up words that start with the start of that word.

I guess I’ll just have to readapt to the new logic. One thing which is more positive though is that if I’ve forgotten the name of a dashboard, if I can remember some key words of the dashboard, it will bring up the dashboard I need even if I don’t search for those words in the correct order.

Hi @Sean_Middlehurst,

Hope this message finds you well! I see that the searchbox logic behaves in the same manner on my end as well. Even if this capability is planned to be kept going forward, I will make sure to mark this post as a Feature Request and archive it so that someone from the AWS Team may address this concern in the future!

Thank you!
