Unable to connect Athena dataset

Hi Team,

I’m trying to create a Glue x S3 x Athena x Quicksight connection. Glue created the Data catalog and the output of Athena queries have been stored in the S3 bucket. However, upon moving to Quicksight and clicking on New dataset > Athena > give a data source name > I’m not able to proceed further because the I’m not able to select any tables.

Being a novice Quicksight user, I’m unable to figure out where I’m going wrong.

Hi @Iniyan - Welcome to AWS QuickSight and thanks for posting the question.
Can you please verify the below details.

  1. First ensure that the table is queried in Athena console, this is just to confirm there is NO issues from Athena side.
  2. Can you please add the S3 bucket by going the User ( Top right Panel) → Manage QuickSight -->Security & Permission → Manage → Add S3

Try the above steps and share the outcome.

Hi @Sanjeeb2022. Thanks for your prompt response. Athena seems to be working fine. under security and permission in Quicksight, I clicked on Manage under “QuickSight access to AWS services” but it just seems to be IAM management and nothing proceeds from there. Where do I find ‘Add S3’?

Hi @Iniyan - Can you ask your QuickSight Admin to add you… You should see manage option here and add S3 bucket.

Regards - Sanjeeb

Hi @Sanjeeb2022 , I created the Quicksight account and in the conduit I seem to have all the admin permissions. However, it still doesn’t work. Can you please let me know what is it that I’m not getting?

Hi @Iniyan - Are you able to add S3 in manage? To access Athena data, ideally QuickSight should have access to Athena and the S3 bucket. Please login QuickSight with your AWS admin account and see whether you are able to add it or not.

In parallel, you can raise a request to AWS Customer support team so that they can also guide you in this process via screen share. To raise a request please follow the link - Creating support cases and case management - AWS Support

Hi @eperts - Any advise on this issue?

Regards - Sanjeeb

HI @Iniyan - Please follow the documentation found here Authorizing connections to Amazon Athena - Amazon QuickSight on how to connect QuickSight to Athena.

If you get stuck with something in specific let us know.
