Waterfall chart issues

Hi All,

I need your help in waterfall chart.
I have created in like below screenshot, all bars are coming like running sum but I need few bars should be strat from base
Like 4th bar should be start from base 0 on x axis.

Hi @Nivu and welcome to the QuickSight community!
So do you mean to say that ‘Tax’ should start from the base? So is ‘tax’ a value, like ‘Sales’ is, for your ‘Line Item’ field or is it a value within another field (along with ‘other expenses’, advertising, etc..)?

To alter a waterfall, you would need to add a field to breakdown, as you can see below in my example:

Before

After

Additionally, it may be more beneficial to assist further if you were able to put together a sample version of your analysis with anonymized data into the QuickSight Arena view:

Thankyou for your reply Brett
So Tax is values of field that we are using on x-axis like you are using region and you have values east, west so my query here is -can we start any waterfall bar from base .
like in your case, can we start west region from base …

If I want to start particular bar from base not all the bars
If I will add field in breakdown then all the bars start from base

Hi @Nivu,
Waterfall charts are more designed to show how your values individually affect the outcome, or total based on the fields you’ve added to your visual.
For a fairly basic example:

I’ve added ‘Sales’ as my value, so the total that the visual will be working to show is the overall sum of sales.
Since I’ve added ‘Region’ to category, it will now show the regions and how they influence that total. It defaults to order them in ascending order (which would be alphabetically).

Now when I add a field to the breakdown, it’ll change how the visual is operating:

So now that I’ve added ‘Year’ to the breakdown section, it will now run the sum of sales per category and break it down by ‘Year’ to show how the sales for each year combine to influence that total number.

In regards to your scenario, based on the values in your example’s x-axis, if you sort ‘descending’, Tax should be first as it’s the last value alphabetically in your example (if you sort by your value field). But I don’t believe that’s exactly what you’re trying to visualize, is it?

Thankyou for your reply
But I am looking for below breakdown example.
I have tried to apply in my worksheet but that is not working for me..it will change all the graph when I am dragging any field to breakdown.

Hi Brett,
Also, do we have any option to do colour individual bars in waterfall graph
Or can we do this by creating any calculatied field

Hi @Nivu,
I’m not quite sure what you mean by ‘below breakdown example’? I was explaining the waterfall chart setup in QuickSight and how it visualizes the data. With the way it sounds like your dataset is designed, I’m not sure you’ll be able to achieve what you’re looking to do with the current waterfall limitations.

In terms of the color options, you do not have the ability to set an individual bar color; I tried testing out by setting specific value colors to the field being utilized in the visual and it did not change.

I will mark this as a feature request for potential enhancements to the waterfall visual option to promote visibility to the support team.
