Field Coloring

Hello,

I have a question about the field coloring. I know that you can select a color for a specific field and then when you use this field in a color section for a chart, let’s take line chart as an example, then the lines will be colored respectively.

Let’s imagine I have a brand and models field - each brand has lots of different models, and there are just a few brands. Let’s imagine I have a line chart where on X axis I have date, on Y axis I have some value. I want each brand to have its own color - this can be done via field coloring option manually considering that there are not that many brands. However, I also want the models to be colored in a color of the brand they belong too - and considering that there are dozens of models, and new models can appear, manually going through each value and apply a color is an overkill. Also on the line chart I am displaying all the models and in the color argument for a line chart I have models.

Are there any possible ways/workarounds to achive the above?

Best regards,
Kseniya

Hello @ksenstad

QuickSight has a 50 data colour limit:

I would recommend adding the 50 colours you would like to use into your theme so that it is not always a manual process. That being said, you can also edit the colors of the field level:

Hello @duncan ,

Thanks for the response.

I don’t think I really understand how it solves the issue of having lots of models in the model field and have them automatically colored in the color of the related brand. Plus new models can appear.

Also, thanks for pointing out that only 50 values in a field can be colored! What if there are more than 50 values? E.g. in our model field we have 100 models and we need to color them in 4 different colors based on the brand they belong to.

Best regards,
Kseniya

Hello @ksenstad

To my knowledge there is not really a way to have QuickSight go through a range of similar colours based on another field.

I can mark this as a feature request for the QuickSight team.
