How to make visuals and analysis more presentable (in QuickSight or other software's)

I did some analysis on applications for a loans company. I have conducted analysis and created visuals to prove my statistics, and trends found. The one problem i have is that Quick Sight’s visuals aren’t entirely pretty, and don’t look the best in presentations.

Is there a way to somewhat tidy up what the visuals look like, or make them more clean looking / presentable. Or do i need to snapshot each visual and send to an image editor like photoshop and make it look better in there?

Examples could be adding flag images next to row headers which are labeled as countries, or adding background colour, text stating what is being shown, etc.

I think this is more of a skill i need to develop in PowerPoint or Photoshop, however i interested in how people make their visuals (and findings) more presentable.

Thanks

Hi @HarveyB-B

depends what your understanding of “more clean looking / presentable” is. A sample would be great to see what your QS visuals look like and what you are expecting.

Thanks for the fast response.

The best example i can find is many ‘KPI’s’ i have. They all relate to data in a visual (second image), hence the coloured text. They basically just state how many x we have. As this is a dashboard for myself and other analysts, it doesn’t need to be pretty.

Each number is taken from a field which is used in many visuals. If i want to see the table which has group with a count of ‘387’ in it, and i want the people who i am presenting to know that i am focusing on this group, how can i use both the kpi and visual to do this. Let’s say that this visual is a bar chart showing the number of people who tried to commit fraud, over total applications, by last 12 months (monthly), filtered to age.

I guess my main point is, how can i implement these type of KPI’s / number’s which state something into my visuals.

Something like this where you have the timeline / chart, with the KPI (or number of x) being displayed on top as a main focus.

For me, the end goal is just to improve my skills in creating presentations, and a good way to start this is by improving the way i show my analysis - easy to understand, and getting my point across swiftly.

I can keep attaching some examples of things which i would like to create, but i think it is powerpoint/photoshop skills that i would need to improve to create these type of visuals (using static data i have)

Hi @HarveyB-B

did you check out the democentral? like Sample

You can achieve a lot with “free form” and overlays.

I would say 90% of your samples you can achieve.

e.g.

Most of the time the question is “what and how”.

Thanks for the help. This looks like a good tool to use within AWS. Pretty much covers everything i need.

Is there a way for me to import some of my datasets to this tool, so i can start playing around and seeing what i can do with my data, rather than sample data and templates?

Edit: I see a ‘Time Left’ in the corner, so i assume this isn’t a ‘live’ tool, more of a beta? Is there a longer-term version of this i can use for the future?

HI @HarveyB-B
it is QuickSight!
I only used Arena to demonstrate.
BR

Thank you, very useful!

After reading and going through the walk-a-long, it isn’t really business friendly. It is more experimental and used as playing about with data, and making nice dashboards/presentations.

Since i can’t upload large datasets, or use datasets i have in QuickSight already, it isn’t as useful as i thought. I think to play around with mock data it is great, however for the business it isn’t a tool i can use with our data. In addition we have to publish the dashboard/file to the public, which we obviously could not do with our data.

Yet again, thanks for the help. However i think i may need to look at other options.

Hi @HarveyB-B

i only used Arena to demonstrate the function. Arena itself is the same QuickSight as you are using just integrated in the QuickSight Community.

Everything you can to in Arena you can do in you QuickSight as well.

I only wanted to show you thats possible to build “more clean looking / presentable” dashboard if you know how.

BR

So do i use arena to create the better looking visuals, or what part of QuickSight do i use where i can use my own private datasets to create these dashboards?

Sorry for any confusion

You are using QuickSight. Arena is just a public version of QuickSight.

So how do i make stuff like this? Or is this creatable inside of QuickSight? Sorry if i am going in loops, just got a bit confused.

Sample

Oh ok, so free form i can use within QuickSight, and i use custom visual content for these borders/overlay. Will look into these. Thanks for the help!

You are welcome.
If we are good for now. Could you please solve the topic? I guess now its up to your creativity.

Will do. Just a quick thing, how do i enable freeform? I’ve read through this documentation, however i do not have the “placement” option. Is there an option i have to click to enable me to do this?
