Joining direct query dataset to SPICE dataset

I experimented with creating a new dataset from a Redshift source and an existing SPICE dataset, and I could not see a way to force the new dataset to be direct query. Instead, QuickSight kept trying to make a SPICE dataset out of the new dataset. Is this behavior required?

Hi Theodore,

Blending multiple datasources / datasets in QS Data Prep – uses SPICE only at the time of this post (Feb 2023). Athena or other query services can be used for Direct Query.
