Unable to use datasets in the new data prep experience

Hello I am testing the new data prep experience and it does not allow me to select readily available datasets, my understanding was that the user could use those could you confirm what I am missing please?

Hello Fransesco ,

If i am not mistaken the reason is that the data set which you have are old or before the GA of QuickSuite. If you have dataset which was created after the GA of QuickSuite, it should work to use input as dataset/ data source or file upload.

hope it helps.

Hi Deep,

Is there any provision to allow using datasets created in both the new and legacy experience to be used in the same child dataset? It appears that you can’t combine the two types using either experience. This is a shame as I would like to use the new experience, but if it means I would be creating datasets that can’t be joined to the thousands of datasets that already exist, then I will have to keep using the legacy experience, and perhaps never move onto the new experience.

What does worry me is if they retire the legacy experience before allowing for the mix of both experiences in child datasets.

Kind regards,

Sean

Hello Sean,

If you ask my opinion, I think it could be a temporary issue as new feature was launched recently and could be causing it.

It was my observation which i found and for testing you may try that approach. However, i don’t see or expect customers rebuilding all those dataset to use data prep. I believe its a temp issue and will be sorted out.

hope this gives some idea.

Cheers,

@Deep thanks for getting back should I raise this via AWS support or get this flagged as a request?

@Franc3sc0 Here is why the datasets are grayed out when using Dataset as a source functionality. All those datasets are created in the legacy data preparation experience. But you are looking to bring them into the new data preparation experience (GAd October 23).

For datasets as sources, we currently require both parent and child datasets to be in the same experience. Because the new experience offers multiple net new features (Append, Pivot, Unpivot, Aggregate etc.) that are not available in the legacy experience, we want to prevent the mix between experiences (for parent and child datasets).

Here is the solution if you want to use parent datasets from the legacy experience:

You can switch back to the legacy experience and create child datasets there. To do this, simply create a new dataset and at the top right of data preparation page, click on the ‘Switch back to legacy experience’ button

Future plan:

We will add the support in future to upgrade datasets in the legacy experience to the new experience. This will enable the ability to use parent datasets

@Sean_Middlehurst We currently cannot combine datasets between the two experiences. This is because the new experience offers advanced data preparation features like Append, Aggregate, Pivot, Divergence etc. that are not available in the legacy experience.

Our recommendation is to Switch back to legacy experience when you need to use a parent dataset from the legacy experience.

Addressing your concern, we will retain both the experiences for the near future. We plan to upgrade datasets created in the legacy experience to the new experience which will then solve this requirement.

The new experience has been launched to help customers with advanced data prep use cases (when there is no dependency on previously created datasets in legacy). But we hear your request to combine datasets between experiences and we have a plan to address it in future.

@vignessh.b How can we revert back to the old Quicksight then?

I need to migrate a dashboard & datasets which were created pre “Quick Suite” to a new PROD account.

@Matthieu Just to add, this is not tied to the Quick Suite launch. There is a separate feature we launched in the UI (on October 23rd) for data prep - which is the new data preparation experience. Both legacy and new data prep experiences exist side-by-side. So the discussion here is tied to the data preparation capabilities in Quick Sight (part of Quick Suite).

All legacy datasets you created before the feature launch (October 23rd) will by default be taken to the legacy experience. For new datasets, you will be taken by default to the new data prep but have the option to switch back to legacy experience. Within the data preparation page, on the top right, there should be a button - ‘Switch back to legacy experience’. You can switch at any time before saving a dataset. This is by design since the datasets published in the new experience cannot be downgraded to the legacy experience.

Does that help address your question?
