I have a similar requirement to the issues raised in the following threads:
- Display Zero in Visual Not "No Data"
- Handle empty visuals (No data)
In my case, I have a simple bar chart visual, where in certain cases, no rows are returned based on the filter settings. Rather the user be subject to an error/warning message (“No data”), I want an empty chart to be displayed.
For my visuals, I have even defined a reference line (a target threshold) which I would also expect to be displayed in the empty visual.
Hello iparnell,
Thanks for reaching out.
Currently, there is no way to hide the visual or show empty/blank visual when there is no data, it shows the label “no data”.
One recommendation I got is, you can add a custom text using a custom text box visual which can be placed at the top of the dashboard. For example:
- A text box visual with text such as, “A visual displays no data when there is no data present in the dataset for the selected filter(query) conditions”
I will mark this as a feature request for the QuickSight team.

Hi Adedolapo, thanks for your reply.
The recommendation you proposed doesn’t really help as it assumes consumers of the report will read the text at the top of the Dashboard. Consumers are also interested in seeing the reference line in the visual, even if there isn’t currently any data accumulating towards the reference line.
There was a similar question posted in November 2024 where the respondent advised they would raise this as a feature request, so it may be worth checking for an existing request before creating a new one.
Thanks again for your help.
Hello iparnell,
Thanks, this is linked to the existing feature request.
