Filter control selects all values when empty

I currently have a filtering issue when creating a control with the “Text field - multiline” option:

  • If I delete all values of the filters, the connected graphs and tables then *select all
    possible values
    .

  • Instead, what I need to happen is for the graphs and tables to show “No Data”.

You can see an example in this adaptation I’ve made of DemoCentral’s “Viewership Insights” (From the Media Entertainment Viewership Analysis)

As you can see, even if the “Age Segment” filter (top right) is empty, the graphs show all the data. Instead, I need the graphs to display “No data”

This does not seem to happen with other options of filter control, such as dropdowns (shown in the “year” filter)… but I need a multiline control, and I need it to default to “select none” when it’s empty.

What am I missing?

Hi @JesusDeSivar and welcome to the QuickSight community!

You can accomplish this by using a parameter control. Start by setting up a parameter for age and under ‘static multiple values’, write in ‘None’ or however you’d like it to appear.

Once you create, you’ll then be prompted to add the parameter, choose ‘control’ where you can setup as a Text field - multiline.

Last, setup a filter on each visual. Choose a ‘custom filter’ and link it to the parameter you just made.

Let me know if this works for your case or if you have any additional questions!

Hi @JesusDeSivar,
It’s been awhile since we last heard from you so following up to see if you had any additional questions?

If we do not hear back within the next 3 business days, I’ll go ahead and close out this topic.

Thank you!
