Questions about QuickSight pricing regarding 'READER' users

Hi!

We’ve been using QuickSight (Enterprise) for quite some time already, so we’ve been used to the old pricing model. We are aware of the changes in user-based pricing, which seems to be scheduled to be globally applied in the next month. However, there are still some things that have not been clarified by previous questions (& answers) on the topic.

  1. Suppose I have an account with 10 registered QuickSight READER users. Under the new user-based pricing, they would incur a total cost of $30 per month, just to “exist”, right? Now, suppose I keep them registered and simply change our plan for a (monthly) capacity pricing model. How does this affect the way we will be charged by those registered users? Does the reader sessions apply to the usage of our own provisioned users interacting directly with the QS interface as well or just for embedded content? Will they still be costing us each $3 per month, besides the $250 that is going to paid for the sessions?

  2. Under the user-based pricing, does it consider IAM federated users as well? Does this kind of user also incur a cost of $3 per month?

Thanks!

Hi @caio.almeida,

If you have 10 registered QuickSight Reader users, under the user-based pricing model, each Reader costs $3 per month. So, yes, the total cost would be approximately $30 per month just for these users to exist in the system, regardless of their activity.

When switching to capacity pricing, the registered users would no longer incur a per-user charge. Instead, you would pay for sessions used, starting with a base of 500 sessions per month for $250. Any additional sessions beyond this would be charged at $0.50 per session. This pricing model applies to both embedded content and direct interaction with QuickSight if you choose to use it for your provisioned users.

Yes, IAM federated users accessing QuickSight as Readers would incur costs under the user-based pricing model. The cost would depend on the specific Reader license type they are assigned to otherwise charged based on sessions if capacity pricing used.

Therefore, you would not be paying both the $250 capacity fee AND the $3/user fee - it’s one or the other pricing model.
