Unable to Edit Custom SQL of a dataset

Hi All,

I am unable to edit the custom SQL of my Datasets - something I used to be able to do earlier. Has there been an update to QuickSight as the UI looks quite different when I try to edit the dataset now.

Thanks,
Tanisha

This is what I see when I try to edit the dataset the way I usually do. I am the owner of this dataset.

You will find edit dataset option under summary

can you please try now? all dataset owners should be able to see the join panel in the dataset page irrespective of having data source ownership. If still did not allow you to edit, please check on the data source permission. CustomSQL query is not editable if the user is not the owner of the data source.

Hi Ashok, ninjadp,

I tried, but I still am unable to edit the dataset. Please find the screengrab below that shows that I am the owner of the dataset.

Please find below the image that does now show the option to edit the dataset.

Please note I have been able to edit other datasets with the new version but only have issues editing this one.

Thanks
Tanisha

Hi Tanisha,

Is this a datasource which you have created ?

Please check if the solution i posted previously helps : Share dashboard with another QS author - how to grant permissions to change custom SQL? - #4 by Tyler_Martin

Hi Koushik,

Yes - this is a dataset I have created.
Below is the screenshot from the datasource which shows I am the owner.

Below is the screenshot from the dataset which shows I am the owner.

Please tell me if I am missing something here?

Thanks a ton!

Hi Tanisha,

In your scenario, what you are seeing is the table used as part of the dataset . This is not a custom SQL . You should be able to view all the fields as in your table cc on the left side.

Note : custom SQL does specify when used.

Koushik

Hi Koushik,

You’re right - I can see the relevant columns on the left hand panel. But how do I enable the Custom SQL? Sharing what I see when I click on View Details, below:

I want to be able to edit the underlying SQL code
Thanks
Tanisha

You can create a custom sql from the underlying datasource : Using SQL to customize data - Amazon QuickSight

Select the datasource (QS )
Click > Create dataset
Use Custom SQL

Hi Tanisha,
To edit custom SQL, you need to have owner permission on underlying data source. Can you check if you have necessary permissions on Data source as well. If not, get owner access to this Data Source and then try editing the custom SQL in Dataset.

Ran into this issue a while ago, you can see and use the data set, but you likely don’t have the Owner permission so you can actually make edits or change to the data set

Hi Koushik,

So basically - I’d be recreating the dataset and not editing the SQL of the dataset? How do I see the original code of the dataset CC? Because I remember using the same steps to create the dataset initially.

Hi Ashok,
I am the owner of this datasource and dataset.

I can edit other datasets, that I have created in the same datasource but have trouble only with this one :frowning:

Thanks
Tanisha

Hi Jeff,

Please find the screenshot that shows I am the owner of the dataset and the datasource

Not sure what the issue is with this particular dataset.

Thanks
Tanisha

Hi Tanisha,

I looked at screenshot you added in start of this post, I see your data set is not a custom SQL data its on full data set loaded with entire table/view. If data set is customer SQL, it will have an indicator, as shown in pic below.

Hi Ashok,

Got it, thanks. I think this is what Koushik (@Koushik_Muthanna) was trying to say too. I have created another dataset using Custom SQL which helps me edit the SQL as I want.

Thanks a bunch!

Got it & Now, I done it on my traeger vs pitboss web. Thanks.
