We have never had any Pro users or created any topics, so why were we charged for Amazon Q, and how can we cancel it?

We have never had any Pro users or created any topics, yet Amazon Q shows as activated and displays the message: “Your account will be charged the monthly enablement fee. To deactivate this feature, remove all Pro users and Topics.”

How do we deactivate this feature, and could you explain why this charge actually occurred?

Hi @zmaiymh

We ran into an issue last couple of months when one of our Admins created an AuthorPro by mistake. The Amazon Q feature as you have already captured in your screenshot is active by default. It gets switched on automatically once QuickSight detects that there is a Pro user license in your account.

In our case once the initial 30 days of free trial period was over the 250 enablement fee started getting charged and that is when we realized that we had a Pro license created. We changed the licenses back to Author and are expecting that the coming months the charge will not be applied.

To answer your question, if you don’t have a Pro license in your account there is no enablement fee. You should be able to verify this from your billing data. The charge is applied once any Pro license is detected in your account.

@Giridhar.Prabhu Thank you for your response! I just have one final question to confirm. We haven’t used Amazon Q in the past few months, yet there is a charge for it on our bill. Has this amount actually been deducted? How should we address this?

Hi @zmaiymh

  1. First, double check your user list in Manage QuickSight page for the three Pro Types to ensure there are no users with Pro licenses. If you find any change back to the Non-Pro licenses.

  2. Since you have not really used the Q for anything, you can explain the situation to your AWS account manager and parallelly open a ticket with AWS for a refund.

  3. I think it is a reasonable request and they have the means to check your account and establish that you did not do anything with your Q license. So hopefully you will get the refund.
